Life Studies

About us

Our practice starts with life - with the peaceful study of live subjects. We organise, host and curate drawing sessions so that artists can develop their abilities to observe and describe the human form. This includes portrait studies as well as the depiction of the whole figure.

We carry this out in conjunction with other arts organisations - Ellis House Arts Centre, Midland Junction Arts Centre and Joondalup Community Arts Association at several metropolitan locations.

Our practice includes our own private work in portraiture and the human figure and is comprised of drawings, paintings and sculpture.

We aim to bring artists and models together for these studies at our own studio, located among the Carnegie Studios at 1 Old Great Northern Highway, Midland. Here we hold regular portrait and life study sessions in order to produce finished works for exhibition and for entry into art competitions.

Working from Life

Creating portraits for exhibition at Midland Art Centre at the end of 2023, small groups of artists have been coming together to depict a series of portrait guests from life.

In the course of the year we will meet and describe 8 or 9 subjects who have been working in music, literature, the visual and three-dimensional arts or in social leadership in the communities of the Swan.

We assemble two or three times each month at the LiveArt Studio to develop our portraits using traditional techniques in drawing, photography and painting. This brings artists and our friends together. We hope to develop our art whilst also observing the creative nature of our contemporaries.

In the Studio.

At the LiveArt studio we hold classes in drawing and painting, and group workshops. Our group of models are professional in portrait sitting and anatomical life posing, and have become an ongoing, essential part of our studio work.

Models

We are always interested in meeting and offering work to models for portraiture and for life studies (including both anatomical/nude and draped modelling). Male and female subjects are welcome to approach us for more information about our sessions, the artists and studios, the conditions that apply and fees that we pay. We do not expect models to be experienced and will offer new models some coaching if required.
